Phonics
Intent
Our aim is to ensure every child becomes a confident, expressive, and fluent reader through a consistent and high-quality phonics programme. We deliver the Read Write Inc programme of study for the teaching of phonics, following best practice as outlined by the scheme. This structured approach is designed to build strong foundations in Reading and Writing from the earliest stages.
Implementation
- Phonics is taught across the school at the same time each day, ensuring consistency and focus.
- All classrooms and teachers are equipped with the necessary resources (including speed sound charts to support spelling post-phonics) to deliver phonics in line with the Read Write Inc programme.
- In Key Stage One, staff have received training to effectively implement the approach of cued articulation to support phonics instruction.
- Children receive books weekly that match sounds learnt in class which supports practice and progression at home.
- Parents are encouraged to read with their children daily (with phonics, library or home books) to reinforce learning and build reading fluency.
- Parents can access Read Write Inc Phonics videos on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/@RuthMiskinTrainingEdu to practise phonics at home.
Impact
- Children benefit from a consistent and structured phonics programme that supports rapid progress in reading and support with writing.
- The use of cued articulation enhances phonemic awareness and supports accurate pronunciation.
- Regular home reading builds confidence, fluency, and a love of reading.
-
Parents are empowered to support their child’s learning journey with guidance, games, and resources linked to the Read Write Inc scheme.
