Geography

Vision

At St Margaret’s CE Primary School, our vision for Geography is to inspire pupils with a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for life. We aim to equip children with a deep understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes, encouraging them to think critically, ask questions, and develop informed perspectives on global issues.

Intent

Our Geography curriculum is designed to:

  • Develop substantive knowledge of places, environments, and geographical processes.
  • Cultivate disciplinary knowledge by encouraging pupils to think like geographers—asking questions, interpreting data, and drawing conclusions.
  • Embed procedural knowledge through practical fieldwork and map skills.
  • Ensure progression across key stages, building on prior learning and deepening understanding.
  • Promote cultural awareness and global citizenship by comparing diverse regions and exploring the impact of human activity on the environment.

Implementation

We deliver our Geography curriculum through:

  • A progressive skills framework that builds locational knowledge, place understanding, and fieldwork techniques from KS1 to KS2.
  • Cross-curricular links with history, science, and literacy to enrich geographical understanding.
  • Use of maps, globes, digital resources, and fieldwork to develop procedural skills and spatial awareness.
  • Inquiry-based learning where pupils explore real-world questions such as climate change, trade, and settlement patterns.
  • Differentiated activities that allow all pupils to access and engage with geographical content, including visual aids, group discussions, and independent research.

Impact

The impact of our Geography curriculum is evidenced by:

  • Pupils demonstrating a secure understanding of geographical concepts and vocabulary appropriate to their key stage.
  • Confident use of maps, data, and fieldwork techniques to investigate and present findings.
  • Ability to articulate informed opinions about geographical issues and explain the reasoning behind their views.
  • Progression in geographical thinking, from simple observations in KS1 to complex analysis and evaluation in KS2.
  • Preparation for secondary education with a strong foundation in geographical knowledge and skills.
