Vision

Our vision for Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) is to foster a love of language learning and cultural exploration. Through the iLanguages scheme, we aim to develop confident, curious, and competent linguists who are equipped with the phonics, vocabulary, and grammar skills needed to communicate effectively and appreciate the richness of global cultures.

Intent

Our MFL curriculum is designed to:

  • Follow the three pillars of language learning: phonics, vocabulary, and grammar, as recommended by the Ofsted MFL Research Review.
  • Provide a spiral curriculum that ensures progression and revisiting of key concepts across KS2.
  • Support teaching with high-quality resources, native speaker voiceovers, and structured lesson plans.
  • Promote active learning through songs, games, stories, and kinaesthetic activities.
  • Ensure that all pupils, regardless of background or ability, can access and enjoy language learning.

Implementation

We deliver our MFL curriculum through:

  • The iLanguages scheme, which includes long and medium-term planning, age-related expectations, and assessment materials.
  • Systematic teaching of phonics using the ‘Phonic Planets’ methodology to improve pronunciation and confidence.
  • Use of interactive resources such as video clips, sound files, and the Language Builder app to reinforce learning in class and at home.
  • Differentiated activities and mixed-age resources to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Integration of Talk4Writing and co-operative learning strategies to enhance engagement and retention.

Impact

The impact of our MFL curriculum is evidenced by:

  • Pupils demonstrating improved pronunciation, fluency, and recall of vocabulary.
  • Confident use of grammatical structures and sentence building in both spoken and written language.
  • High levels of engagement and enjoyment in language lessons.
  • Reliable and moderated assessment data that informs planning and supports pupil progress.
  • Positive feedback from Ofsted and other external evaluations regarding the quality and consistency of MFL provision.
