PSHE curriculum
Our Vision
At St Margaret’s, we believe that PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) is at the heart of helping children to become confident, caring, and responsible members of society. Our vision is to equip every child with the knowledge, understanding, and emotional intelligence needed to lead safe, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
Through PSHE, we aim to nurture children’s personal growth, emotional wellbeing, and social awareness. We want our pupils to develop resilience, empathy, and respect for themselves and others, so they can make positive contributions to our school, community, and the wider world.
Intent
Our PSHE curriculum is designed to support pupils’ spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, and physical development, and to prepare them for the opportunities and responsibilities of later life. It is based on the DfE statutory guidance for Primary Relationships and Health Education and the PSHE Association Programme of Study, helping us to meet our duties under the Equality Act 2010 to promote equality and challenge prejudice.
The curriculum is organised around three core themes:
-
Health and Wellbeing (H) – developing self-care, emotional regulation, healthy lifestyles, and safety awareness.
-
Relationships (R) – building positive relationships, understanding respect, diversity, and equality, and recognising safe and unsafe situations.
-
Living in the Wider World (L) – exploring rights and responsibilities, financial awareness, and the role we play in our community and society.
Our intent is for children to:
-
Be self-aware – to understand their emotions, strengths, and personal identity.
-
Be healthy – to make informed choices that support physical and mental wellbeing.
-
Be respectful – to value diversity and show kindness and empathy.
-
Be responsible – to understand their place in the world and the impact of their choices.
-
Be safe – to know how to protect themselves and seek help when needed.
Implementation
PSHE at St Margaret’s is taught through discrete weekly lessons as well as being embedded across the wider curriculum. Learning is enriched through links with Science (e.g. healthy eating and body awareness) and Computing (e.g. online safety), ensuring concepts are meaningful and relevant to pupils’ everyday lives.
Our curriculum map follows the Brighton and Hove PSHE Curriculum, which reflects the needs of the children at our school as well as the wider community. For the Early Years Foundation Stage, PSHE learning outcomes are drawn from the EYFS Framework for Personal, Social and Emotional Development and the Development Matters Curriculum.
Lessons are interactive, inclusive, and age-appropriate, encouraging discussion, reflection, and collaboration in a safe and supportive environment. Through PSHE, pupils also explore protective behaviours and anti-bullying strategies, helping them to understand how to stay safe and support one another.
Impact
By the time pupils leave St Margaret’s, they will:
-
Have a strong sense of identity, self-worth, and emotional resilience.
-
Be able to form and maintain healthy, respectful relationships.
-
Understand how to stay physically and mentally healthy and make informed choices.
-
Show empathy, respect, and a sense of social responsibility.
-
Be equipped with the confidence and life skills needed to thrive in modern society.
Our aim is for every child to leave St Margaret’s as a kind, confident, and capable individual who understands how to live well with others and make a positive difference in the world around them.
